Travel Blog #12: Ups and Downs

If you take nothing else from this travel blog, understand that when traveling, there will be ups and downs with every trip, that’s just life. That’s just travel life.

Day 12: the day started off as any other Friday would – field trip day! It was in the forecast to rain, so I dressed accordingly. It turned out to be about 80 degrees and sunny, even though the forecast said rain and/or storming, ALL DAY. Even as I was standing in the beaming sun. Talk about confusing! We visited the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, which was pretty cool. Tiananmen Square is a city square in the center of Beijing and the Forbidden City is almost 1,000 meters long, filled with temples and ancient buildings.

At these tourist attractions, it seemed as if we were the attraction, though. You know how I’ve talked about getting pictures taken of me several times, right? Think of those instances. Quadrupled. From literally every angle, people had phones and cameras out, especially because we wore our school shirts, so we were matching. The trip only lasted a few hours, then we went back to campus. I took my daily nap, lol.

When I woke up, I went with the normal crew to dinner at the cafeteria, or the canteen. At dinner we planned to go out and get a taste of Chinese night life. Mind you, only two of us are over the age of 21 but the legal drinking age here is 18 so the 18-20 year olds really took advantage.

Everyone was drunk. I don’t mean drunk, I mean DRUNK. Sloppy drunk. Jumping and dancing on tables, whining, yelling, carefree, silly, flirty, mad that sober people are sober – drunk. I was beyond annoyed (because I was one of two sober people who were babysitting drunk people, so of course I wasn’t having fun.) We’re supposed to be back to our apartment by 2AM because the doors lock then. I told everyone around 1:15AM that we should wrap it up, of course no one wanted to go and I couldn’t leave alone. We eventually left – at 5AM. We got into the building (eventually), but I promise that I will never, ever, go out here again. I really like my friends here, buttttt, no.
